The Liverpool winger sustained a calf injury during their Premier League game at Anfield on Sunday – leaving Portugal boss Fernando Santos sweating over his fitness.

Fans were hopeful Jota would make it back in time for the World Cup but Klopp has confirmed he will miss the showpiece tournament – which starts next month.

Speaking during Liverpool’s press conference, Klopp said:

‘Jota will be out for a long time, we talk about months. We will see – I don’t want to put a number on it because I hope there is a positive moment in rehab, but it will be long.’

Klopp went on to explain how the injury would rule Jota out of the World Cup. He said:

‘Jota will miss the World Cup, really serious injury in the calf and we have to recover him. The process starts and that’s it. Very sad news for the boy, for us and Portugal.’
