Mason Greenwood Granted Bail

Manchester United footballer, Mason Greenwood will be released from jail later today after being granted bail.

The England striker, 21, will be allowed home after spending two nights in jail after his legal team made a bail application. He is being held at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham, North Wales, where he will be released later.

Judge John Potter granted Greenwood bail after a short hearing at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court.

The Man Utd star has been charged with the attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault of a teenage student.

Greenwood missed the brief hearing in court this morning, which was held in private with the press having to watch outside Court 4.

His bail conditions means he has to reside at his rented home in Bowdon, Gtr Manchester, and is not allowed to contact the complainant or witnesses.

The forward only appeared in the dock at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday, wearing a grey sweatshirt and grey jogging bottoms.

He had been denied bail until a crown court appearance on November 21 but he was granted bail today after his legal team made the bail application.

The footballer was charged with attempting to rape a woman on October 22, 2021.

He is also accused of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour, namely ‘monitoring her social media accounts and making threats and derogatory comments towards her, amounting to a serious affect upon her’.

He is also accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on December 21.

The player was first held in January over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.

He had been on bail since then, but was arrested in the Trafford area on Saturday for an alleged breach of conditions by contacting the alleged victim.

Shortly after 4pm on Saturday, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it had authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Greenwood.

Janet Potter, deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS North West, said: ‘The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

‘All three counts relate to the same complainant.

‘Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police.’

The controlling and coercive behaviour relates to a period between November 2018 and October this year, while the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm is dated December 2021.
