Lionel Messi, the world's most famous player, has been chosen Time Magazine's Athlete of the Year for 2023.
Messi was named Athlete of the Year after winning the Ballon d'Or for the eighth time and raising the prominence of the sport in the United States with his move to Inter Miami.
Messi was instrumental in Argentina winning their first World Cup victory in 36 years, defeating reigning champions France in the final last December.
