Kwesi Appiah Applies For Vacant Black Stars Head Coach Job

Former Black Stars defender James Kwesi Appiah has applied for the vacant Black Stars head coaching role in the wake of Otto Addo’s decision to step down from the position.

Otto Addo stepped down from his role as Black Stars head coach to focus on his work as a talent coach with Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund after leading Ghana through the 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign in Qatar.

In an interview with Kumasi based media outlet Sompa FM, Appiah confirmed widespread reports that he had applied for the job.

“It is true. At the time I heard the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had announced no Ghanaian had applied for the job, I felt that as a Ghanaian I am capable of doing the job and that’s what influenced me to file my application with those of the foreign coaches” Appiah said.

Appiah led Black Stars to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil but got sacked after Ghana crashed out at the group stage in a controversy filled campaign.

He returned to lead Ghana to the 2019 AFCON in Egypt where the Black Stars exited at the Round of 16 stage leading to another sack.

The 1982 AFCON winner has been working with lower tier side Kenpong Football Academy since July 2021.
